The duck dive is not really a trick, but it's an essential movement in bodyboarding because it allows to go under the foam and so to catch up with the peak. However even if it seems to be easy at first sight, this technique is rather difficult to acquire because it demands a good reading of the waves and so a good experience.
You've got to put the following movements together rather quickly :
- Hold the board at about 20cm from the nose with the hands on both sides.
- Pull the board to you until the front of the board comes at the level of your shoulders.
- Hold out your arms to push the nose of the board under the water. At the same time prop your knees on the tail to keep the bodyboard in the same axis as the body.
- With the knee on the tail push hard in order to push the board deeper into the water. The other leg goes automatically out of the water to help this support.
- Keep on pushing with the knee and in the same time pin your body to the board in order to leave the smallest resistance to the foam. So you should dive under the wave at about 50cm from the front of the foam.
- After having crossed the foam, just pull to the top and let yourself go up.
