Child, Mike Stewart lived on Big Island where he used to surf hollow waves on volcanic lava. Without information about the bodyboard world, he improved his style alone, at his own speed, improving his take off and trying to find new moves. Then, he met Tom Morey, the two men became friends and started to work together. From this collaboration, the Mach 7-7 was created, board that stayed a long time as one of the best bodyboard.
Stewart did not know his level and reading a magazine, he saw Pat Caldwell doing an el-rollo : so, he was not the only one to make this kind of tricks?! From here, he registered for the Sandy beach contest in order to assess his level. Arriving in Sandy Beach, he was able to see that his level was really good but also that his equipment was better than the equipment of other riders. New in the world of bodyboard but his pure style has already attracted attention of riders. For his first competition, he went into the final and finished third. Assuming his weakness, he continued working and few months later, he won the next contest.
In 1982, Mike Stewart won his first Pipeline contest and since this moment, the legend was born. He won this competition 11 times. With the most important list of victories, Mike Stewart stays however an humble man : he like to win but without thinking that he is the best rider.
Mike also try to do a lot for the bodyboard, to give to this sport the recognition that we know today. Now, he is the boss of a bodyboard brand : Science but he continues to surf in competition and in free surf. He stays as a favourite for the Pipeline contest.
