  HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BOARD

How to choose your board? This is an important question. This page will enable you to make a right choice. The different kinds of foam are compared, we will see the influence of the shape and finally what is the right size for you. For other details like tails, noses... just look in the corresponding pages.

THE SHAPE : The general shape of the board is linked with your position on it (the stance) and the type of waves you usually surf. The following table summarizes the main information :

Position Stance Type of waves Model

allays lying on 100% Prone all large nose
lying on and kneeling 50% Prone - 50% DK all polyvalent
allays kneeling 100% Drop knee all large in the middle
all polyvalent hollow narrow and slender

THE MATERIAL : there are a lot of different types of foam and each has is own characteristics. To have a better idea of the foam you may choose, just pay attention to the next table (1 : poor, 4 : very good) :

Acceleration Catching Flexibility Manoeuvrability Nervousness Rigidity Stability

Arcel 4 2 1 3 4 4 3
Polyéthylene 3 3 3 4 3 2 2
Polypropylene 3 2 2 4 4 2 3
Surlyne 2 3 3 4 3 1 3
Volextra 3 2 2 3 4 2 2
HDPE 3 3 2 3 2 2 3

THE SIZE : The final difficulty is to choose the size of the bodyboard. The size of the board is linked with your height and weight and is normally given in inches (one inch=2,58cm) ; the following table will help you to find the right size. An other way to have a good estimation of the size you need is to put the board vertically in front of you : if it reaches your navel, this is the right size. But this is just an estimation!! because we don't have all the same height of legs even if we have the same size. An other thing that is also important is the thickness of the board : a thick board is suitable for beginners because it gives us more stability but a thin board will give you more manoeuvrability.
